A ute that clicks instead of cranks at the servo, a 4WD that will not start before a camping trip, or a caravan battery that dies overnight usually comes back to one component. Car batteries work hard in Australian heat, rough-road conditions and short-stop driving, so choosing the right replacement is about more than finding the lowest price.

Do not buy the biggest battery available just because the rating looks better. Start-Stop Systems Need the Right Technology

Vehicles with automatic start-stop systems need special attention. These systems cycle the battery far more often than a conventional vehicle, including when the engine shuts off at lights and restarts moments later.

Most start-stop vehicles use either an Enhanced Flooded Battery, known as EFB, or an Absorbent Glass Mat battery, known as AGM. These are designed to handle repeated cycling and higher electrical demand. A swollen or distorted battery case, leaking electrolyte, a strong sulphur smell, or heavy corrosion around the terminals needs immediate attention. Do not keep driving and hope it improves. Battery acid and gas can damage surrounding components, while a compromised case is a safety issue.

Battery age also matters. Safe Replacement and Disposal

Batteries are heavy, contain corrosive materials and can produce explosive gas. Remove jewellery before working near the terminals, keep sparks and flames away, and use eye protection. Disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive. When installing the new battery, connect positive first and negative last.

Never throw an old battery in general rubbish. Automotive batteries are recyclable, and the lead, plastic and other materials can be recovered for further use. Return the old unit through an approved battery recycling point when purchasing or fitting a replacement.
