A flat battery before work, a slow crank at the boat ramp, or dash lights flickering on a cold morning all lead to the same question: which battery fits my car? The answer is not simply the biggest battery that will fit in the tray. Your replacement needs the correct physical size, terminal layout, hold-down, power rating and battery technology for your specific vehicle.

Getting one of these details wrong can mean a battery that will not mount securely, cables that will not reach, warning lights, poor starting performance or a shortened battery life. For modern cars, 4WDs and utes with stop-start systems, choosing the wrong type can also cause charging-system issues.

Which battery fits my car? Start with fitment

The most reliable way to identify a suitable battery is to check the vehicle make, model, year, engine and variant against a fitment catalogue. A Toyota Hilux, for example, may use a different battery depending on whether it is petrol or diesel, manual or automatic, and which year series it is. The same applies to Ford Rangers, LandCruisers, Isuzu D-Max models, Holden Colorado utes and passenger vehicles.

Do not rely on the battery being in the vehicle now. A previous owner, workshop or roadside service may have fitted a battery that works but is not the original specification. Check the battery label, then compare it with the vehicle handbook and fitment information before ordering.

For a quick check, record the battery part number, length, width, height, terminal position and the way it is secured in the tray. These details narrow down the options fast.

Check the physical battery size first

Battery case dimensions matter more than many buyers expect. The replacement must sit flat in the battery tray and fit beneath any retaining clamp, bonnet clearance point or plastic battery cover.

Common Australian battery sizing systems include JIS and DIN codes. You may see codes such as 55D23L, 75D26R, N70ZZ, DIN55, DIN66 or DIN75. These codes provide useful clues about battery size and performance, but they are not a substitute for checking dimensions and terminal layout.

A battery that is too short may move around in the tray. That is not a minor issue. Vibration can damage the case, strain the terminals and shorten battery life, particularly in corrugated-road 4WD use. A battery that is too tall may contact the bonnet or prevent the hold-down bracket from fitting.

Measure the old unit if possible. Check length, width and height in millimetres, including the terminal height. Also look at the lower edge of the battery case. Some batteries use a base ledge designed to lock into a specific hold-down clamp, while others use a top clamp or strap.

Terminal position and polarity are non-negotiable

The positive and negative posts must be in the correct positions for your cables. If the positive terminal is on the wrong side, the lead may not reach. Stretching a battery cable across the battery is poor practice and can create a short-circuit risk.

Battery codes may include an L or R suffix that refers to terminal orientation. However, conventions can vary depending on how the battery is viewed. Always compare the terminal layout directly with the old battery, vehicle tray and product image. Confirm the positive terminal location rather than assuming the letter means the same thing across every brand.

Also check terminal type. Most passenger vehicles use standard top-post terminals, but some European vehicles use different terminal shapes, and some 4WD or commercial applications may have extra terminals for accessories. If your battery has a fused positive terminal assembly, sensor, vent connection or battery monitoring lead, make sure the replacement supports the setup.

Choose enough starting power, not just the highest number

Cold Cranking Amps, usually shown as CCA, indicates the battery's ability to supply starting current in cold conditions. In Australia, CCA remains a useful comparison because diesel engines, high-compression engines and vehicles with heavy electrical loads need strong cranking performance.

Match or exceed the manufacturer's recommended CCA where the physical battery size and technology are correct. A higher CCA rating can be useful for a diesel LandCruiser, Ranger or D-Max, particularly if it sees early starts, regional travel or long periods between drives. But do not choose a battery solely because it has the biggest CCA figure on the shelf. If it has the wrong dimensions, terminals or mounting design, it is not the right battery.

Reserve Capacity, often shown as RC, is also worth checking. This refers to how long a battery can support electrical loads if the charging system is not supplying power. More reserve capacity can be useful for vehicles running fridges, lighting, compressors, winches or other accessories, but it does not replace a properly designed dual-battery setup.

For a standard daily driver, select the correct fitment with suitable CCA and reserve capacity. For a touring 4WD, work ute or vehicle carrying electrical accessories, consider how the battery is actually being used before stepping up.

Match the battery technology to the vehicle

Modern battery technology is not interchangeable. Conventional flooded lead-acid batteries, EFB batteries and AGM batteries each suit different charging systems and duties.

A conventional battery suits many older vehicles and basic electrical systems. It is often the cost-effective choice for routine replacement where the vehicle does not have stop-start operation or unusually high cycling demands.

EFB, or Enhanced Flooded Battery, is commonly used in vehicles with entry-level stop-start systems. It handles more charge and discharge cycles than a standard flooded battery. Replacing an EFB with a basic conventional battery can lead to premature failure and reduced stop-start operation.

AGM, or Absorbent Glass Mat, batteries are designed for higher electrical demand and frequent cycling. They are common in premium stop-start vehicles and may be specified for some models with extensive electronics. An AGM battery generally costs more, but fitting a cheaper conventional replacement where AGM is required is false economy.

If your vehicle was fitted with AGM or EFB from factory, replace it with the same technology unless the vehicle manufacturer specifically allows an alternative. Some newer vehicles also require a battery registration or reset procedure after replacement so the battery management system can charge the new unit correctly.

Do accessories mean you need a bigger battery?

Extra driving lights, a UHF, dash camera, fridge, inverter or electric trailer brake controller all add load. That does not automatically mean the cranking battery should be oversized.

The starting battery's first job is starting the engine. If accessories are used while parked, especially a fridge or camp lighting, a properly installed auxiliary battery is the better answer. A dual-battery system separates starting power from accessory power, helping avoid the familiar problem of waking up at camp with a flat cranking battery.

For light accessory use, a higher-capacity battery within the correct fitment range may help. Check the alternator, cables, earth connections and charging voltage too. A new battery cannot fix a weak alternator, corroded terminal, parasitic drain or poor earth strap.

Before fitting the replacement battery

Turn the ignition off, remove the key or keep the smart key away from the vehicle, and allow systems to shut down. Disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive. When installing the new battery, connect positive first and negative last.

Keep sparks, flames and cigarettes away from batteries. Even sealed-style batteries can release gases under certain conditions. Wear eye protection, lift carefully and secure the battery with the correct hold-down bracket. A loose battery is unsafe and can cause terminal damage on rough roads.

After installation, check that the battery is firmly clamped, the terminals are clean and tight, and no cable is rubbing on sharp metal. Reset the clock, radio or electric window settings if needed. On vehicles with battery monitoring, stop-start or advanced electronics, arrange any required battery coding or registration.
