A misfire that appears under load, a rough idle at the lights, or a flashing check engine light can turn a dependable ute or 4WD into a frustrating job fast. Knowing how to identify a faulty ignition coil helps you narrow down the cause before buying parts - and avoids replacing plugs, injectors or sensors that are not actually at fault.

Modern petrol engines commonly use coil-on-plug ignition, where each cylinder has its own coil fitted directly over the spark plug. Older vehicles may use a coil pack serving two or more cylinders, while some still use a single ignition coil and leads. The diagnosis principles are similar, but the safe testing method depends on the ignition system fitted to your vehicle.

What an ignition coil actually does

An ignition coil converts the vehicle's 12-volt electrical supply into the high voltage needed to jump the spark plug gap. That spark ignites the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder. When a coil is weak, intermittent or completely failed, the affected cylinder cannot burn fuel properly.

Heat, vibration, age, oil contamination and moisture all take a toll on coils. This is especially common on hard-working vehicles that see corrugated tracks, towing duty, stop-start running or long periods under bonnet heat. A coil can fail outright, but many begin as an intermittent fault that only shows up when the engine is hot or under acceleration.

Signs of a faulty ignition coil

The most common sign is an engine misfire. You may feel a shudder at idle, hesitation when taking off, a flat spot under acceleration or a noticeable loss of power climbing a hill. On a V6 or V8, a single-cylinder misfire can feel mild at first. On a four-cylinder engine, it is usually much more obvious.

A check engine light is another useful clue. If it flashes while driving, reduce load and stop as soon as it is safe. A flashing light often means an active misfire severe enough to send unburnt fuel into the catalytic converter. Continuing to drive can damage the converter, turning a relatively straightforward ignition repair into a far more expensive job.

Other signs include harder starting, poor fuel economy, a fuel smell from the exhaust and an engine that runs worse in wet weather. You may also notice the vehicle starts normally when cold but begins missing once it reaches operating temperature. Internal coil windings can break down as heat builds, then appear to recover after the engine cools.

These symptoms do not automatically prove the coil is at fault. Worn or incorrectly gapped spark plugs, damaged wiring, a leaking rocker cover gasket, poor earth connections, vacuum leaks and fuel delivery faults can all create similar behaviour. The aim is to identify the affected cylinder and rule out the basics before ordering replacement ignition parts.

How to identify a faulty ignition coil step by step

Start with a scan tool if you have access to one. Diagnostic fault codes such as P0301, P0302, P0303 or P0304 indicate a misfire on a particular cylinder. The final number generally identifies the cylinder number, although you should confirm the cylinder layout for your exact engine before removing anything. A P0300 code means random or multiple-cylinder misfires and calls for broader diagnosis.

A code pointing to cylinder three does not mean the coil is definitely faulty. It tells you where the misfire is being detected. Use that information to inspect and test the coil, plug and connector on that cylinder first.

Inspect the coil and connector

With the engine off and cool, remove the engine cover if fitted and inspect the suspect coil. Look for cracks in the plastic housing, carbon tracking, melted sections, corrosion on the terminals and a damaged rubber boot. Carbon tracking looks like a thin dark line and can allow spark energy to leak to earth instead of reaching the spark plug.

Check the wiring plug is fully seated and that no wires are stretched, broken or rubbed through. Oil in the spark plug tube is also a warning sign. It can damage the coil boot and cause misfires, but the underlying problem may be a leaking rocker cover gasket rather than the coil itself. Fix the oil leak as well as replacing any damaged ignition component.

Swap the coil to another cylinder

For a coil-on-plug engine, the most practical test is often a coil swap. Move the suspect coil to a different cylinder, clear the fault code, then run or road-test the vehicle until the fault returns. If the misfire code moves with the coil - for example, from P0302 to P0304 after swapping coils two and four - the coil is the likely culprit.

This test is more reliable than guessing from appearance alone. Keep the spark plugs in their original cylinders during the test, otherwise you introduce another variable. If the code stays on the original cylinder, inspect the plug, injector, wiring, compression and air leaks instead.

Check the spark plug before fitting a new coil

A worn spark plug makes an ignition coil work harder. Excessive plug gap, a cracked porcelain insulator or heavy deposits can overload a healthy coil and create the same symptoms as coil failure. Pull the plug from the misfiring cylinder and compare it with the others.

Replace plugs if they are due by service interval, visibly damaged or incorrectly gapped. If one plug is wet with fuel, black with soot or oily, investigate why. Fitting a new coil without dealing with the plug condition may mean the new part has a short life.

Use electrical testing with care

A multimeter can check some coil circuits, but resistance readings are not a complete pass-or-fail test on many late-model coils. Modern pencil coils often contain internal electronics, and manufacturer specifications can be limited. A coil may measure within range when cold yet fail under heat and load.

If you have wiring information for the exact vehicle, check for battery voltage, earth and a control signal at the coil connector. No power supply or poor earth points to a wiring, fuse, relay or ECU control issue rather than a failed coil. Avoid probing connectors carelessly or using a test light on sensitive control circuits. High-voltage ignition systems can bite, and incorrect testing can cause extra faults.

When the fault is not the ignition coil

A misfire on one cylinder can be caused by a blocked or failing injector, low compression, a burnt valve, intake manifold leak or a mechanical timing issue. If swapping the coil does not move the fault, do not keep replacing coils hoping for a result.

Multiple misfires across several cylinders may point to old spark plugs, low battery voltage, contaminated fuel, a failing crankshaft sensor, vacuum leak or fuel pressure issue. On turbo petrol engines, boost leaks and plug gap are worth checking because cylinder pressure rises under boost and exposes weak ignition components quickly.

Diesel engines do not use ignition coils to fire the fuel mixture. They rely on compression ignition, although they may use glow plugs for cold starting. If your diesel Ranger, D-Max, LandCruiser or Colorado is misfiring, look at fuel, air, sensors and mechanical condition rather than ordering petrol ignition coils.

Choosing the right replacement coil

Once testing confirms the coil is faulty, match the replacement by make, model, engine, year and, where available, VIN details. Similar-looking coils can have different connectors, mounting points, internal electronics and output characteristics. Fitment matters more than appearance.

If one coil has failed due to age, the others may not be far behind. Replacing the single confirmed failed coil is the lowest-cost repair and often makes sense. Replacing all coils together can be worthwhile on higher-kilometre vehicles when access is difficult, the coils are the same age and more than one is showing signs of weakness. It depends on the vehicle, budget and condition of the existing parts.

Use dielectric grease only if recommended for the coil boot or vehicle application, and do not pack the electrical terminals with it. Seat the new coil squarely over the plug, lock the connector properly and refit any covers or brackets. Clear codes after repair, then take the vehicle for a proper drive to confirm the misfire is gone.

A confirmed diagnosis saves money and gets your vehicle back to work sooner. If the fault follows the coil during a swap test, source a fitment-specific replacement, inspect the spark plug at the same time, and deal with the problem before a simple misfire becomes catalytic converter damage.
