A loaded ute that starts pitching after a dip, a 4WD that skips across corrugations, or a family car that takes longer to settle after a speed hump is telling you something. Shock absorbers are not just there to make the ride feel less harsh. They control spring movement and help keep each tyre in contact with the road. When they lose their damping ability, braking, steering response and tyre wear can all suffer. When Do Shock Absorbers Wear Out?
As a broad guide, many standard shock absorbers start to show reduced performance between 80,000km and 120,000km. That does not mean every shock is unusable at 80,000km, or that one still feels perfect at 150,000km. It means this is a sensible range to inspect them properly rather than assuming they are fine because there is no obvious oil leak.
A city-driven passenger car with normal loads may get a longer service life. A Hilux, Ranger, D-Max or LandCruiser regularly carrying tools, towing a camper, running larger tyres or travelling unsealed roads can wear through its shocks much earlier. Heat is a major factor. Repeated suspension movement on rough tracks heats the oil inside the unit, and sustained heat reduces damping performance over time.
Age matters as well as kilometres. Rubber bushes harden, seals deteriorate and internal components wear even on vehicles that do not rack up big distances. Shock absorber wear is often gradual, so drivers adapt to the change without noticing it. The vehicle may not suddenly become impossible to drive. Instead, it loses control and composure little by little.

Why Worn Shocks Affect Safety and Tyres
A shock absorber does not carry the vehicle's weight. Springs do that job. The shock controls the spring so the tyre follows the surface instead of bouncing away from it. Less tyre contact means less grip when you brake, turn or accelerate.
On wet roads, this can be the difference between a controlled stop and the ABS working overtime because a wheel is unloading. What Makes Shocks Wear Out Faster?

Shock Absorbers vs Struts: Know What You Are Replacing
