Getting the details right upfront is the quickest way to avoid delays, return freight and fitting a part that simply will not work.
Start With the Exact Vehicle Details
The registration plate can be a useful starting point, but it is not the full story. Use it to identify the vehicle, then confirm the details against the car itself and the product listing. The most useful information is the make, model, series, build month and year, engine size or engine code, transmission, drivetrain and body type.
Build date matters because manufacturers often change components during a production run. A vehicle first registered in 2018 may have been built in late 2017. If a listing says it suits vehicles from 01/2018 onwards, use the build plate date rather than the date the vehicle was first put on the road.
For many Australian vehicles, the build plate is under the bonnet, on a door pillar or in the engine bay. Your owner’s manual, service records and registration paperwork can also help. When the part is safety-related or expensive, such as a steering rack, turbocharger, brake caliper or automatic transmission sensor, the VIN is the strongest reference point to have ready.
Know the Difference Between Model and Variant
The model name is only the first layer. LandCruiser, Ranger, D-Max, Colorado, Commodore and X-Trail all come in multiple variants. Some differences are obvious, such as wagon versus cab chassis. Others are less visible, including factory tow packs, diesel versus petrol engines, turbo versus non-turbo configurations, two-wheel drive versus four-wheel drive and heavy-duty brake options.

Match the Part to the Job

For a working ute or off-road 4WD, consider the load and conditions before choosing. Standard shock absorbers may be suitable for an unloaded daily driver. If you have removed the old part, look for a manufacturer number stamped, printed or labelled on it. Compare that number with the product specifications, not just the photo. Photos are useful for checking shape and connections, but they can be generic across a product range.
Keep in mind that an OEM number may have been superseded by the manufacturer. A quality aftermarket part can cross-reference to the earlier or later number and still be correct. Where there is any doubt, provide the VIN and existing part number when asking for fitment help.
Watch for These Common Fitment Traps
Brake parts cause plenty of avoidable mistakes. Before ordering pads or rotors, check whether the vehicle has front or rear disc brakes, the rotor diameter and thickness, and whether a performance, towing or heavy-duty package was factory fitted. Some models change caliper design halfway through a series.
Cooling parts also need closer attention than most buyers expect. A radiator can differ by transmission type because an automatic model may require an integrated transmission cooler. Fan shrouds, hose outlets and core thickness can change between petrol and diesel variants. Never force a hose or electrical connector to fit - stop and recheck the application.
With wheel bearings, CV joints and driveline parts, confirm the spline count, ABS sensor arrangement, axle position and 4WD configuration. A part may be listed for the same model but apply only to an independent front suspension version, a live-axle version or a specific differential.
Electrical faults can be equally misleading. Before replacing an alternator, starter motor, ignition coil or sensor, confirm that the existing part is faulty. Battery condition, damaged wiring, poor earth connections and blown fuses can produce the same symptoms. Testing first can save buying a part that was never the problem.
Measure When the Vehicle Has Been Changed
Factory fitment data works best on standard vehicles. If your rig has been lifted, converted, repaired after accident damage or fitted with aftermarket accessories, take a few measurements before ordering. Measure extended and compressed shock length, hose length, mounting-hole spacing, wheel stud pattern, bulb base type or accessory bracket dimensions as relevant to the job.
For suspension and steering work, do not select parts purely by lift height. The correct component depends on the control arms, bump stops, wheel offset, tyre size and intended travel. A part that technically installs can still bind, bottom out or create poor alignment if the overall combination is wrong.
The same principle applies to roof racks, snorkels, tonneau covers, flares and side steps. Check cab type, roof rail arrangement, factory accessory mounting points and whether another accessory occupies the same space. On dual-cab utes, one small change in model year can affect trim or bracket design.
